Inlägg av fernando »

Hej everyone,
I have medical license from Socialstyrelsen, and recently i got job offer as underlakare in a private clinic(lakarhus),so i would like to know what is the difference between private and non private vard central in Sweden,is it ok for me to start my practice at private clinic?
Secondly what should underlakare do during his work, does he work with the specialist doctor Or he has to work on his own with the help of senior colleagues?
Tack sa mycket.

Hello Fernando and welcome to this forum!

First of all, congratulations to your Swedish medical license and your job offer! Hopefully you will enjoy all that Sweden has to offer, both privately and workwise.

Now to your questions.
i would like to know what is the difference between private and non private vard central in Sweden,is it ok for me to start my practice at private clinic?
For you as a new doctor there is practically NO DIFFERENCE between a Vårdcentral run by the public sector or a private company. There will likely be differences, but of minor form/lab routine/how many patients you have per day and so on.
In terms of merit, it dos not matter if you work for a private company or the public sector, so don't worry about that - your CV is safe!
Secondly what should underlakare do during his work, does he work with the specialist doctor Or he has to work on his own with the help of senior colleagues?
A Vårdcentral is different than working at say the Emergency department at a Hospital or a ward. You will not be doing ward rounds and most of your patients will have gotten an appointment at least a few days in advance. You will most likely be working alone, have your own patients booked to you personally, but with the opportunity to ask a colleague when in need of a second opinion (at least thats how it should be!).
To a certain degree there will be "emergencies" handled at the Vårdcentral - this could be minor cuts that needs stitching, tonsillits, vertigo, etc. It depends on the facility and how far away the nearest hospital is. Ask your future employer about their routines!

Best of luck! :tur:

Hello again,

A Vårdcentral, where the specialist is an Allmänläkare, i.e. have completed an ST-tjänst of a minimum of 5 years within the speciality field Allmänmmedicin, handles most of your everyday problems and follow ups after the patient has been at the hospital.

As an example you can expect to meet patients of all ages with musculosceletal pain, skin problems, various types of infection, high blood pressure that needs managing, head aches, vertigo, and so on. Your job is to, if possible, identify the cause of the patients complaints and either treat it (if possible) or refer the patient to someone who can. At times you may also have to refer them to a specialist for further investigation and tests.

In the publication in the link below you will find a report from a Vårdcentral, regarding what problems, diagnosis and prescription which were the most common at their drop-in clinic (in Swedish).

http://www.lul.se/Global/Extran%C3%A4t/ ... s%20vc.pdf

In summary, during the 9 weeks that the study was performed at total of 727 visits occured, with 662 unique patients. Just above 500 of the 727 visits saw a doctor, the rest were handled by a nurse.
The ten most common reasons for visitin to the Drop-in clinic stood for a little above 80% of the visits. The top reasons for seeing the doctor (see page 18) was ear problems, urinary tract problems and the need for some sort of certificate/sick note.

My suggestion is that you ask you future employer of a list of the ten most common diagnoses at their facility. They should not have a problem retrieving that information from the computer.

Best of luck on you new job! :tur:

Hello,

I have a question regarding the requirements to work as an "underlakare" in Sweden, having a UK medical qualification but without GMC license.

Thank you

Hi!
I don’t think it is possible and why would you want to do that? Better to finish the two FY in UK and at the same time study Swedish to the level of C1 and then move. Is this because of the Brexit thing?
