P4 skrev:At the Education centre in the health care central in Ystad, physicians from other EU countries receive education before starting jobs at healthcare centrals in eastern Skåne.

The physicians are already specialists in general medicine. During five months, they get an intensive training in Swedish and learn about the Swedish healthcare system from experienced tutors.

Three physicians have started their education now. One of them is Barbara Pahljina, who worked for many years as a family doctor in Slovenia. She thinks the education will be a good way to get familiar with the Swedish primary care.

- It is good to have an education which allows us to see how physicians work here in Sweden, there is a difference from the way things are done in Slovenia, she says.

Why do you want to try out working as a physician in Sweden?

- Because you have a better workplace environment here, we have more time for talking with people - in Slovenia we received 50 or 60 people every day, that is a lot, it feels like there is more time for the patients here, she says.

One of the other physicians is Edina Megyese, who had her own private practice in Hungary. She has now arrived in Hässleholm with her family and she too hopes for a better workplace environment.

- Here in Sweden there is a lot of time for each patient and I get to talk and help better, she says.

Thusly, there are three physicians who previously worked in Hungary and Slovenia who have now started at the Education centre in Ystad. They have studied Swedish and passed different tests before arriving here and during five months they will be here three days a wekk.

Every week they will also be at healthcare centrals in Kristianstad and Hässleholm, where they have already gotten a probationary employment, where they are tutored as they receive patients. After getting an approval, they can get a regular employment at the healthcare centrals.

The purpose is to reduce the shortage of specialists in general medicine and the concept is new for Skåne, according to Karin Melander, who is the head of division of primary care in "Skånevård Kryh" (Kristianstad, Ystad, Hässleholm).

- It is completely new and we started this because of our big shortage of specialists in general medicine. It is our biggest challenge in primary care, in Sweden and in Skåne and also in Kryh, of course. We decided that we had to do something, this is one of the efforts we are making, an important part of the efforts we are making now, she says.

Karin Melander says that the idea was conceived after they toured other county councils searching for good ideas. She means that a big advantage with the Education centre in Ystad is that education and introduction of the physicians from other EU countries are gathered in one place and that they get tutoring from physicians with much experience. The hope is that the physicians will want to stay longer at the healthcare centrals after the education.

- Absolutely, it is what we want, we will do everything to make them feel at home and want to stay in Skåne and in Kryh, she says.

What are you thinking today, now that it has started?

- I am very glad and feel so proud, because a lot of work has been invested in this, we have been preparing for a year. Not everything has gone smoothly, it absolutely has not, så that is why it feels so joyful and I am very glad that we have these three physicians here today and inaugurate the Education centre, it feels really good, Karin Melander says.

- Now this process will keep going, once every half year we get new physicians from the EU and can refill the education positions according to our needs, she says.

Are the costs great?

- Yes they are, but they are expences to be covered by the healthcare choice, so to say. On the other hand you could say that where there is a shortage there are also large costs, so in the long run this is a good use of the money, in the long run this will help us, says Karin Melander.
