Application for AT

Inlägg av kancil1990 »

Greetings,

I would like to ask about guidance or steps for AT application in Sweden. If one has approval from National Board of Heath and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) for Internship,

1) Should one just wait at week 9 or week 38 for vacancies posted in Lakartidningen or one can proactively approach any hospital at location of interest for enquiries about vacancy?

2) Is there a centralised system for AT application or it is individual basis for hiring?

3) As stated in the directives, sufficient knowledge of Swedish language is one's responsibility but during application for AT, would there be any chance for beginners in the language or must the whole application done in Swedish?

4) As understood that average waiting time for AT is about 9 months...but is this implying that this is the waiting period to get a response from the respective hospital applied?

5) Last but not least, average salary for AT internship period is about 25,000 to 30,000 Swedish Krona, is that sufficient for a decent living (presumably not at Stockholm but other smaller states/region)

Thank you for your kind info and attention. :glad:

Hi!

1) AT is officially announced two times a year at the weeks you are mentioning. Occasionally vacancies arise on other times but it is rare.

2) There is no central coordination for AT. Each county council (landsting) manage their own system.

3) Without sufficient knowledge of the Swedish language I say your chances to get hired are none. The minimum requirement stated by most county councils (landsting) is level C1 at the CEFR scale.

4) The supply is lower than the demand for AT in Sweden. It is normal to practice medicine and/or research at least six month to become more attractive for an AT vacancy.

5) It depends on your criteria for decent living. You do not state from which country you are and what standards you are used to. If you thinking sports car, large apartment in the city centre, eating out every night, and travel a lot, no. Neither is it enough to alone support a family.
I think I have a good life. I live with my girlfriend in the centre of Stockholm in a one bedroom one bath condo. We are both students and together we have 20k to live on each month. That is the same as the net income of one AT salary (the tax in Sweden is around 32%). It is enough for good food, go out once a week, hang out with friends, some saving, and to travel a couple of times each year.

Is there any particular reason why you want to do your AT in Sweden? My suggestion is that you do your AT in your home country and study Swedish at the same time. I think it is easier if you have your medical licence and then apply for ST in Sweden.
