Re: Training in Ophthalmology

The Karolinska Institute has a page in Swedish about TULE (there is also an English page but it is unfortunately very limited).

http://ki.se/ki/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=330&a=3723&l=sv

The pdf document "Information angående TULE-provet" seems to contain the information you are looking for.

I am a little busy right now so I'm afraid that I have to refer you to using Google Translate on the information text, rather than doing a manual translation myself.
I should have more time and be able to answer follow-up questions later next week.

An archive with previous TULE tests can be found here:

Thank you all for your valuable comments.
I know if do my residency outside the US then I won't be able to practice there but this is not my goal. My goal is to have excellent specialist training in addition to research.
One more question: I need information on the TULE exam, i.e the witten exam format, the textbooks needed (I dont know if I should study Swedish textbooks). I'm familiar with the USMLE step 2CK material is it enough.
Where can I get more info?

Ah, you meant it as a precautionary reminder in case geo1 wants to move to the US after completing the residency in Lund... :smart:

I never wrote Sweden.

Swedish ST is not recognized in the US.

Why would a US residency be a requirement for a specialist position in Sweden?

If I'm right - you must take residency in the US to be allowed to work as a specialist.

Hi geo1!
Sorry for the late reply, my old computer passed away last week.

I am not intimately familiar with the ST application process but I do not think that IMGs necessarily have a tougher time getting into a residency in Sweden, provided that they achieve a decent level of Swedish language skills and that their medical background is approved by Socialstyrelsen.

(which unfortunately can take a long time for degrees from outside the EU, due to slow bureaucracy, so I would recommend that you start applying for that immediately rather than waiting until your PhD is over - especially since you, coming from outside of the EU, will also be required to take the TULE test)

The responsibility for ensuring that you have a sufficient Swedish language skills for working as a doctor lies with the (AT) employer rather than Socialstyrelsen.

Since you are doing a PhD at Lund University, you should be a strong competitor for a residency position (particularly if the PhD concerns ophthalmology and/or if you can do research parallell to working as a residency doctor). In fact, doing research is generally reputed to be "practically a requirement" for positions at the university hospital. I think that getting an AT at the university hospital is likewise made much easier by your PhD at Lund University.

I hope that this answer was useful to you and please feel free to ask more questions if anything is unclear or if new questions come to mind.

Hi,
I am an MD graduate from the American University of Beirut, and I am currently halfway through my PhD studies in Lund University. I have not learned Swedish as my plan was to do the USMLEs and do my residency in the states. However my specialty of interest is ophthalmology and is its highly competitive and difficult to get a position in the states for international medical graduates (IMG). Also I like the research atmosphere in Lund University and I have access to valuable reasrch material with the chance to publish in high impact journals. My questions are:

1- Is the ophthalmology residency competitive in Sweden for IMGs?
2- Is it difficult for IMGs to get a position at reputed eye clinics?
3- I am planning to start an intensive Swedish course at folkuniveristet, which Swedish level is required by the socialstyrelsen to be eligible for the AT internship? and is it easy to get an AT position at Skåne University Hospital if I keep a reasrch position at Lund University?

Thank you a lot!!
